Sports is most commonly defined as a contact sport that involves some level of competitive action, like basketball or netball. Many types of physical activity and some games are also classed as sports. An athlete in a particular sport is also known as a sportsperson. Some popular sports include American football, baseball, rugby, cricket, hockey, softball, boxing, gymnastics and sailing. In the United States, professional competitors can earn a very large sum of money while amateur athletes may only dream of making it on their own sports team.

Professional sport organizations usually manage and maintain a number of sports teams, while amateur teams normally compete with each other to improve their skills and become better contenders in the future. There are a lot of sports organizations and coaching schools that offer formal training for aspiring sportsmen and women. Most people who pursue a career in sports realize that there is a huge need for physical activity and sportsmanship in our schools, youth organizations and communities. Many sports coaches have been hired by sports clubs to help kids and young people develop sports skills and sportsmanship.

Playing sports can be both relaxing and physically active. It has also been proven through research and studies that playing sports helps in the development of certain body functions, including motor skills, hand-eye coordination, endurance and flexibility. Most teenagers and children who play sports regularly develop social and team spirit and are able to accept criticism and constructive criticism quickly. Many athletes find sports as a stepping stone towards a promising career and achieving success in academic and athletic activities later on. Many students who train to be sports professionals consider sports as a stepping stone to reach their goal of becoming professional athletes. It is a great avenue of self-worth and proves that one can have much more than he can ever get from studying alone.
